An accident near Kealia on the Eastside, reportedly involving a pickup truck and a pedestrian, closed Kuhio Highway in the vicinity of Mailihuna Road in both directions for roughly two hours last night.
Eyewitnesses said traffic was backed up to Anahola to the north and to Kapa‘a town to the south. Sgt. Ponce of the Kaua‘i Police Department said officers were investigating an accident involving a pedestrian and a vehicle, but declined to comment further.
Transmissions between emergency personnel and Wilcox Memorial Hospital on scanner frequencies shortly before 7 p.m. said a female jogger was hit by a truck, making contact with the hood and windshield before being thrown roughly 15 feet.
She was breathing but unresponsive to questions from ambulance personnel, according to information heard on the scanner.
Witnesses saw a brown pick-up truck that had sustained front-end damage being removed from the scene shortly before 8 p.m.
