Torrey Santiago put the Waimea High School boys soccer on top, 1-0 at the half, Tuesday night.
But Kaua‘i High School came back with two second-half goals, one by Daniel Victor on an early breakaway down the wing and the other on a follow-through effort by Canaan Bernard as the game wound down, 2-1 in favor of the Red Raider men.
That late wrong bounce of the ball gives the Waimea boys a 0-2-1 record, although the Menehune have been in every single game to the end.
Today, the Menehune have an opportunity to try and get into the winner’s circle as they meet Kaua‘i for their second regular-season matchup at Hanapepe Stadium.
The varsity boys game caps a series of four games at Hanapepe Stadium, starting with the JV girls kicking off at 2 p.m. That game is followed by the JV boys at 3:45 p.m., then the varsity girls at 5 p.m. The varsity boys get their opportunity starting at 7:30 p.m.
Earlier in the season, Menehune first-year goalkeeper Cody Owen did a fantastic job of keeping Kapa‘a outside the net as that contest ended in a 0-0 stalemate to open the campaign.
Kapa‘a came back in its second meeting against the Menehune men to take a 2-0 win behind penalty kicks from Ikaika Fuerte late in the game.
Kaua‘i, on the other hand, has been victimized by the weather as it played its only game this season on Tuesday, the other two regularly scheduled games being called due to inclement weather conditions.
Kaua‘i took advantage of the Tuesday match to run off the practice field and sweep the Menehune, the Red Raider girls handing Waimea its third straight loss, 10-0 behind a hat trick from Ashlyn Ubongen and two goals apiece from Skye Shimabukuro, Jessica Iwata and Brandi Gomes.
Following today’s match in Hanapepe, Kaua‘i will get its first meeting against Kapa‘a on Dec. 30 when it travels to the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium for a makeup game.
The varsity girls kick off at 4:30 p.m. followed by the boys taking the field at 6:30 p.m.
Kapa‘a’s JV team will be hosting Island School in a JV exhibition match starting at 10 a.m. today at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium, weather permitting.
