Over the past few weeks, my mailbox has been jam-packed with catalogs offering a dizzying array of unneeded holiday items and, in contrast, end-of-the-year solicitations from Kaua`i nonprofits.
I’ve been recycling the catalogs and putting the donation requests aside to decide about later.
But I realize that many of us do that and we never get around to writing those checks, despite our good intentions.
The steady stream of dismal state and national economic news has made me more aware than ever that many of our island’s residents will need help over the holidays and during the coming months. Many may need help for the first time. As of October, our unemployment rate was at 5.4% – higher than the state average and about double what it was just a year ago.
Typically, it has been our island’s nonprofits and churches that have stepped forward to help our residents in times of need. But many of these groups are having a hard time responding to the increase in needs. They are facing their own tough times as state funding is cut and foundation funding, at best, remains flat.
So if you’ve procrastinated like I have, this is the perfect time to help those organizations that provide assistance in the ways that matter most to you. Whether your donation is small or large, when your dollars combine with others, the impact is increased even more.
Giving is easier than ever. While checks are always welcome, many organizations offer the opportunity to give online using your credit card or through PayPal. Just check the website of your favorite organizations. It only takes a couple of minutes to make a big difference for our island’s nonprofits so they can tackle issues and assist local families.
You may be able to take advantage of a tax deduction as a result of your charitable contribution. Be sure to get a receipt for your donation to make completing your tax forms easier.
And if you are wondering in what other ways you can help, just call your favorite nonprofits and ask what they need. Your support and consideration will be greatly appreciated.
