Hale ‘Opio Kaua‘i says ‘Mahalo nui loa’
Hale ‘Opio Kaua’i, Inc. is very proud to announce that the Victoria S. and Bradley L. Geist Foundation recently awarded a $30,715 grant to help support our School Liaison Program, which provides services for our youth at both Kapa`a and Lihu`e middle and high school campuses.
Hale ‘Opio is a non-profit organization whose mission is “Embracing Children and Youth Entrusted to Our Care”, and has been providing community-based programs for education, prevention, diversion, and treatment for children and youth, ages 0-20 years.
Our School Liaison program provides support to the youth in our residential program while they are on the middle and high school campuses of Kaua`i. Staff also assists school personnel to resolve issues or problems that may arise when dealing with Hale `Opio youth, and to model self-advocacy. School Liaisons work to help our youth learn strategies to handle situations with other youth and adults using logic and thinking to help them focus on potential consequences of their actions and what outcomes the youth may want to accomplish.

KIUC and Pacific West Energy LLC to Enter Into Agreement
Kaua`i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) Board of Directors agreed in their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday to enter into a collaborative agreement with Pacific West Energy, LLC (PacWest) to achieve established and necessary renewable energy goals and greenhouse gas reductions.
PacWest plans to develop an approximately 20-Megawatt Biomass–to–Energy Project on Kaua’i to provide electrical capacity and energy to KIUC.
The agreement is a good faith effort between both parties to negotiate and enter into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the project on terms mutually acceptable to PacWest and the Co-op. This innovative agreement helps pave the way for KIUC to build on their current renewable energy needs to help them meet the strategic plan goal of becoming more than 50 percent renewable within the next 15 years. The strategic plan allows them to meet the goal of transforming Hawai’i’s energy portfolio into a renewable energy mix in support of the Hawai`i Clean Energy Initiative’s commitment to moving away from reliance on fossil fuels.
