A Billabong Pipeline Masters champion could be crowned today, but before that can happen, two Kaua‘i surfers must face off against each other and another must face a successful Brazilian.
Only 16 of the 64 surfers are still in contention and three of them are from Kaua‘i.
Evan Valiere and four-time Pipeline Masters champ Andy Irons have been paired together for Round 4 of the competition — the third and final jewel of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Kaua‘i’s Kamalei Alexander has been placed in Heat 6 with Adriano de Souza of Brazil.
Organizers for the event called off competition for yesterday due to the small surf and stormy conditions. There is only one more day needed for the competition to be complete and its status will be determined at 7 a.m., today.
Organizers for the Billabong Pro Maui, the Association of Surfing Professionals Women’s competition, have also called a lay day for the quarterfinals.
Of the eight women remaining, three of them are from Hawai‘i. Teenage sensation Carissa Moore, who knocked off former world champion and current No. 2 Sofia Mulanovich on Wednesday, has been pit against Melanie Bartels. Megan Abubo has been placed in the final quarterfinal heat against Silvana Lima.
