The Hawai‘i State Department of Education announced its Kupono Diploma Program for veterans and former internees at the O‘ahu Veterans Center. Sen. Norman Sakamoto and Rep. K. Mark Takai joined Deputy Superintendent Clayton Fujie in presenting the DOE Kupono Diploma Program to members of the Joint Venture Education Forum.
The DOE Kupono Diploma program grants honorary high school diplomas to World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans, and individuals whose schooling was interrupted due to internment in relocation camps during World War II.
The Hawai‘i State Legislature passed Act 101 in 2007. This Act allows World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans who were unable to complete their high school education due to service in the United States Armed Forces, and individuals whose schooling was interrupted due to wartime practices, to be granted an honorary high school diploma from the DOE.
Current or former Hawai‘i residents who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply. Diplomas may also be awarded posthumously to the family of a veteran or former internee. There is no cost to participate in the DOE Kupono Diploma program.
Under this program, qualified veterans or former internees who successfully completed a General Education Diploma (GED) program will also be granted a honorary high school diploma. A honorary high school diploma may also be awarded posthumously and presented to a family member.
Applications will be accepted at any time. However, applications must be submitted no later than Jan. 30 to participate in a planned May 2009 graduation ceremony. For more information call the DOE Communications Officeat 808-586-3232 or to request an application e-mail doe_info@notes.k12.hi.us.
