WAIKOLOA — The Hawai‘i Team won eight of 11 available points yesterday in the second round of the USA Hawai‘i-Japan Junior Cup contested at Waikoloa Beach Resort’s world-renowned Kings’ Course on the Big Island. Hawai‘i is now up 14 1/2 to Japan’s 7 1/2 after two days of competition.
Japan’s Shohei Karimata and Mami Fukuda finished 3-and-1 yesterday over Kaua‘i’s Kelli Oride and her partner Taeksoo Kim. Japan’s Koki Furuta and Hiroko Azuma finished 4-and-2 yesterday over Kaua‘i’s Levi Miyashiro and Casey Isagawa.
This event, conducted by Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association, along with Japan High School Golf Association, brings together 44 of the best young players from Japan and Hawai‘i (13 boys and nine girls on each team), in a Ryder Cup style tournament designed to foster goodwill between young golfers between the ages of 13 and 18 from the both organizations.
Yesterday’s second round of competition was Foursomes Match Play, more commonly referred to as “alternate shot.”
It involves two players from Hawai‘i alternating shots and matching scores on each hole against the other two opponents alternating shots.
A total of 22 points will be available today as the format is Singles Match Play (individual match play).
Play will begin at 7 am. Since the Japanese team was victorious in 2007, Japan will retain the cup in the event of a tie. Hawai‘i will need a minimum of 22 1/2 points to take the Cup back.
In order to achieve this, Hawai‘i only needs to win 8 of the 22 matches.
