KAPA‘A — Family and friends from around the island gathered for the opening celebration of Pua Lei, a full-line flower shop in Kapa‘a.
“After being a teacher for about five years, I decided I would come back to open this and enhance the floral industry on the island,” said Avery Kano, the shop’s new owner.
Kano, a graduate of Kaua‘i High School, was teaching for about four years in Mililani and added another year teaching in Las Vegas before deciding he wanted to work with the floral industry.
David Alayvilla, a floral designer who has more than 10 years of experience working at Flowers & Joys, joins his nephew in the shop that is located in the back of Kaua‘i Pasta in Kapa‘a.
“We have so many people to thank,” Alayvilla said. “But I’m backing my nephew 150 percent.”
In addition to Alayvilla, Kano has the support of his Kaua‘i ‘ohana, many of whom contribute various items which are sold in the shop.
Pua Lei translates to “flower lei,” but lei selections are not limited to just floral creations as Kano offers a variety of fabric lei, many of which were done by his relatives.
Kano said Pua Lei will work with floral arrangements, lei, cut flowers and shipping of flowers to the Mainland. He noted that they are planning to start shipments of flowers to Japan as well.
In addition, Pau Lei can work with creations of fruit baskets and market baskets.
The shop is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The shop is closed on Sundays.
