Kaua‘i’s Mari Punzal was one of three Wahine who were named to first-team all-WAC yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference banquet held yesterday in Reno, Nev. This is Punzal’s first year making the all-WAC squad.
The announcement came after Punzal’s teammates were honored as players of the year. Senior Taryn Fukuroku was named WAC’s Offensive Player of the Year and sophomore Nicole Mikula was named Defensive Player of the Year.
This was the second year in a row that both honors were awarded to players from the University of Hawai‘i and also the first time in school history that the Rainbow Wahine swept offensive and defensive player of the year awards. This is Fukuroku’s third straight year on the first team.
Junior Ambree Ako was named to the second team All-WAC. Punzal, a 2007 Kamehameha School’s grad, anchored the Rainbow Wahine in the midfield.
In a statement released by Hawai‘i, coach Pinsoom Tenzing said: “I’m excited for them, it’s a great honor. They all worked hard the entire season.”
The No. 3 Rainbow Wahine face No. 6 Nevada in the first round of the WAC tournament tonight at Mackay Stadium.
