A three-car accident at the junction of Kaumuali‘i Highway and Hala Street in Lihu‘e yesterday afternoon briefly slowed traffic but injured none, according to county spokeswoman Mary Daubert.
Daubert said the front vehicle, a red sport utility vehicle, was stopped and making a left-hand turn from the south-bound lane of Kaumuali‘i Highway onto Hala Street, just north of the mall, when a pair of cars approaching from behind rear-ended the SUV and then the middle car in a “domino” effect at around 12:30 p.m.
The middle car, a gray Honda sedan, suffered significant visible damage to its rear bumper, while the rear vehicle, a beige Toyota pickup truck, sustained front-end damage. Those two cars were towed, Daubert said, noting the total estimated damage was $3,000.
Three Kaua‘i Police Department officers, with two police cruisers, directed traffic for a short time after the incident.
