Kaua‘i 40, Kapa‘a 6 – Kaua‘i High School’s Trey Shimabukuro finished 13-of-20, 291 yards and four touchdowns and two interceptions as the defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions defeated winless Kapa‘a High School, 40-6.
Kaua‘i (4-0) compiled 423 yards of total offense compared to 179 for Kapa‘a (0-4).
The Red Raiders, in their first drive, went seven plays for 70 yards, all from running back Paleku Yasay who capped it off with a 5-yard rushing touchdown.
On Kapa‘a’s possession, a bad snap sent quarterback Brehdan Kamibayashi back, scrambling to recover the ball and save the play. But Kaua‘i’s Zachary Suniga recovered it in the endzone for another Raider touchdown, clocked just 10 seconds after their first.
Toward the end of the first, Caleb Sarsona found an open route and caught a 24-yard pass to keep the Warriors from being shutout.
Shimabukuro would go on to throw all four of his TD passes in the second quarter — the first, an 8-yard pass to Dayne Murata five seconds in, the second, a whopping 89-yard catch-and-run to Canaan Bernard, the third, a 23-yarder to Scott Taylor and the fourth, a 25-yarder to Sheldon Sakai.
Three of Kaua‘i’s offensive players posted 100-plus numbers.
Bernard finished with two catches for 119 yards, Sakai had seven catches for 128 yards and Yasay finished with 10 carries and 101 yards rushing.
Kapa‘a went on a successful run in the third. On a third-and-20, Ikaika Fuerte — one of Kapa‘a’s three quarterbacks — looked for the open man. Not seeing any, Fuerte ran for the first down and an extra yard for security. Kapa‘a went to Sarsona for three consecutive plays and got within one yard of the goal line. On fourth-and-1, instead of opting for the field goal, Kapa‘a took a chance but QB Ekolu Yam was tackled for a loss by Chris Longboy, who lost his helmet in the process.
Kaua‘i’s Trent Allianic had a pair of rare misses last night, going 4-of-6 in extra point attempts. He was later utilized as the quarterback for the second half.
Sloppy play ensued in the final minutes of the game with both teams exchanging fumbles.
Neither team scored in the second half.
