In recognition of its conservation efforts, Kaua‘i County was recently awarded a Conservation Innovation Award from the Hawai‘i Conservation Alliance, a press release states.
The county was among a host of others who were acknowledged by the Alliance, a cooperative partnership of 16 government, education and non-profit organizations that are strongly committed to environmental conservation in the Hawaiian Islands through land management, scholarly research and financial incentives, according to its Web site.
“A remarkable revolution has occurred in Hawai‘i over the past five years with increased acquisition of conservation land,” said HCA Executive Director Deanna Spooner. “This quantum leap in conservation was not achieved because of the efforts of just one organization, but rather by a massive shift in perception and participation by Hawai‘i’s citizens, political leaders and agencies.”
For that reason, the HCA partners decided this year to honor the greater land acquisition community across the state, she explained.
The Alliance normally presents its annual innovation award to one organization whose efforts lead to significant advances to the structure or nature of environmental conservation in Hawai‘i. Last year’s recipient was the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for its Conservation Partnerships Program.
