Tomorrow, Kaua‘i Humane Society will host its fourth annual Love a Dog Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Freddie’s Dog Park. Contests, prizes, a raffle, plus the presence of award-winning author Arden Moore are among the day’s events. Moore will educate and entertain with a presentation and book signing at noon. She is presently on tour in Hawai‘i for her latest publication, “Happy Dog, Happy You,” and is author of 18 books on dogs and cats, including “The Dog Behavior Answer Book.” She has been a guest on both “Good Morning America” and “Larry King.”
“In my mind she is a dog whisperer,” said Kaua‘i Humane Society Director Becky Rhoades.
There will be a vendor’s tent filled with canine-specific businesses prepared to woo your pet with massage, a bubble bath, fresh-baked dog cookies and even a pet portrait.
Raffle tickets for $5 could win participants golf giveaways, a night in Hanalei and a gift basket stuffed with dog treats.
“This is a day we celebrate the love of our dogs,” Rhoades said.
Love a Dog Day is held in October because it is National Adopt a Dog month. According to Rhoades, the highest number of dogs flood their facility this month.
There will be contests and games for the pets. Categories include: best costume, best jumper, best trick and speediest dog. First-, second- and third- place prizes will be awarded. Last year hundreds of dogs and more than 1,000 people attended the event.
“This helps raise monies for our dogs,” Rhoades said.
One favorite game that gets everyone laughing is the bobbing for hot dogs contest. A bowl of water afloat with hot-dogs is placed before each contestant. The dog that can eat the most hot dogs out of the water wins.
Besides all the antics, there will be educational booths as well. A KCFCU representative will be available for questions on pet insurance.
