KKCR-FM, Kaua‘i Community Radio and the station’s board of directors, the Kekahu Foundation, selected Kalaheo resident Jerry Brocklehurst as the new station manager. Brocklehurst took his position Oct. 1. He is currently president of the Kaua‘i Music Festival and a board member of the Garden Island Arts Council.
Gwen Palagi held the position for nearly six years and will remain with KKCR through the fall membership drive in November. She plans to relocate to O‘ahu.
The process involved a search committee consisting of Palagi, a station volunteer, a member of the station’s community advisory board, the president of the Kekahu Foundation board and two other board members. After reviewing applicants and interviewing candidates in multiple rounds the search committee provided recommendations to the Kekahu Foundation’s personnel committee and Kekahu Foundation board of directors. The final decision was made by Kekahu Foundation.
“Jerry has the right mix of passion, skills, and sensitivity to our island community to help lead us into 2009 and beyond,” said John Gordon, president of the Kekahu Foundation board.
Last November, shortly after KKCR’s 10th anniversary, the Kekahu Foundation began a strategic planning process to update and implement the vision for the foundation and the station. Public meetings have been held on a range of important topics. Brocklehurst has participated in a number of them. The strategic planning process continues with more public meetings to be conducted through the end of 2008 and implementation slated for early 2009.
“This is an important time for KKCR. Kaua‘i has changed a lot since the station began,” Brocklehurst said. “We need to make sure that we continue to meet our core mission of serving the entire island community. The emphasis is on the two words in the middle of KKCR — ‘Kauai’ and ‘Community’.”
