Kaua‘i 3, Island School 0 – Kaua‘i High School girls volleyball team extended its long winning streak — its best in at least four years — to the start of Round 2 last night, defeating Island school 25-10, 25-16, 25-13.
The Voyagers (0-1 Round 2, 0-7 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation) played with just over half of the Red Raiders (1-0, 7-0) squad, with only its six starters and the libero compared to Kaua‘i’s 12 girls.
Kaua‘i took advantage of that by using a variety of hitters — Jori Jasper finished with seven kills and Malia Kagawa and Noe Tamashiro had three apiece. Setter Mikaila Naholoholo finished with 15 assists.
Tiani Esaki came up with two key digs in the first set to maintain the Red Raider momentum.
Island School put Kaua‘i on the run in the second set. The Voyagers got to a 6-2 lead forcing Kaua‘i to take time out. Out of the break, Hayley Uliana served up six consecutive points which brought the Voyagers to 12-2 — the biggest lead they’ve held over any team in the league so far.
Kaua‘i regained possession when Naholoholo connected with Teal Basquez for the kill. Kaua‘i fought its way back and tied the game with an ace by Tamashiro. Kaua‘i went on to win by 11.
Island School’s junior varsity team competed earlier in exhibition. The scores were not reported.
Waimea 3, Kapa‘a 0 – KAPA‘A — The up-and-coming team from Waimea High School got off to a good Round 2 start yesterday, defeating Kapa‘a High School in straight sets, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-12.
The Menehune may be the defending KIF champs, but only three of those girls were a part of that. They were still able to break even by the end of Round 1 and may be starting to take off despite a fairly inexperienced team. They’re not only quick on the reflexes, they’re quick to see through Kapa‘a’s weak spots and quick to capitalize on the Lady Warriors’ errors.
Setters Fiare Moe and Chaelyn Briones dictated the Menehune offense Brandee Victorino and Jayme Jacinto to a successful night.
In the earlier JV matchup, Kapa‘a beat Waimea 25-7, 25-16 and 22-25.
