Lani Rae Green of Kekaha took the Girls 12 Singles at the DT-Kaua‘i Fall Jr. Open tennis tournament Sunday.
Green, top seeded in the Girls 12 Singles division, took the age group by round robin, similar to Sarah Kukino earning the victory in the Girls 16 Singles division.
In the round, Green opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tarryn Orial and followed that with a win over Brooke Alcuran, 6-0, 6-0 for the title.
“She has won several Open single matches in 10s in the state, but this is her first win in 12s Open,” said Yuka Green, the champion’s mother.
Yuka said Lani Rae is a dedicated player and is trying very hard in the sport.
“She’s trained so hard for this tournament since it was played on Kaua‘i,” Yuka said. “But Lani Rae could not have done it without the help and support of many of the South and Westside coaches and players.”
Yuka added that Lani Rae also got help from the Waimea Canyon Middle School teachers who allowed her to leave school on occasion so she could attend tournaments off-island.
The Designated Tournament-Kaua‘i Fall Jr. Open played at the Po‘ipu Kai tennis courts is hosted by the Kaua‘i Jr. Tennis Association with Carolyn Lum serving as the tournament director.
