Unseeded Chas Okamoto takes 2 in Po‘ipu

PO‘IPU — The unseeded team of Chas Okamoto and Sayo Tsukamoto of Kona upset the top-seeded team of James Lee and Britney Ragunton yesterday.

Okamoto was playing in the Designated Tournament-Kaua‘i Fall Junior Open tennis tournament hosted by the Kaua‘i Junior Tennis Association at the newly renovated Po‘ipu Kai tennis courts.

Okamoto earlier upset top-seeded Kallen Mizuguchi, 7-6(6), 6-2 for the Boys 16 Singles title after advancing through the semifinals of that division with a 6-2-6-1 win over Kealoha Moody.

Mizuguchi teamed up with Kaua‘i’s Sarah Kukino for the top seed in the Mixed 16 Doubles, a division the pair took with a 6-4, 6-3 win over the team of Gabriella Gorence and Kealoha.

The top-seeded Mixed 16 team advanced to the finals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kalia Nip and Dylan Wehrly.

Earlier in the day, Kukino, top-seeded in the Girls 16 Singles, earned that title in round robin play, defeating Madison Duarte 6-0, 6-1, and Nip, 6-3, 6-1.

In the Mixed 18 Doubles division, Okamoto and Tsukamoto advanced to the finals of that division with a 6-4, 6-3 win over the hard-hitting Lee and Ragunton.

Okamoto and Tsukamoto prevailed in the finals with a win over the second-seeded team of Christopher Gora and Mari Tadaki, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

In other Mixed Doubles, the team of Brooke Alcuran and Aidan Dungan of Koloa defeated Sean Kondo and Tarryn Orial of Lihue, 6-4, 6-1 for the Mixed 12 Doubles title.

Sebastian Barahal and Alyssa Tobita defeated the brother-sister team of Jeffrey Liang and Lauren Liang, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 for the Mixed 14 Doubles title.

Alcuran defeated Tarryn Orial, 6-0, 6-1 for the Girls 12 Singles and top-seeded Dani Young was upset by Julia Weisel, 6-3, 6-1 for the Girls 14 Singles title.

Tsukamoto, second-seeded in the Girls 18 Singles, upset top seed Jackie Owens 6-4, 6-4 for the title in that division.

Jeffrey Liang upset top seed Sebastian Barahal 6-1, 6-4 for the title in the Boys 12 Singles and Matt Perez was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Daniel Tada for the Boys 14 Singles.

Joey Kasnetz defeated Logan Chun 6-1, 6-1 for the title in the Boys 18 Singles after Kasnetz upset top seed Lee, 7-6(3), 6-1, and Chun advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over second-seeded Gora in the semifinals.
