Kaua‘i’s Dustin Barca was one of two Hawai‘i surfers to win his heat yesterday in the Sooruz Lacanau Pro in France. Barca defeated former Association of Surfing Professionals champion and fellow Hawai‘i surfer Sunny Garcia after finding the best barrels of the day.
As the top two finishers in the heat, both advance to Round 4.
“It was a close heat, but the waves were fun and I am stoked to make it with Dustin,” Garcia said in a post-surf interview.
Hawai‘i’s Joel Centeio was the other surfer who won his heat yesterday, defeating Brazil’s Leonardo Neves and France’s Romain Cloitre. T.J. Barron also competed but finished fourth in his heat. Dustin Cuizon is also out with a third-place finish in his heat.
Competition should resume today.
A strong performance from Barca in this competition could earn him a spot on the World Championship Tour.
