Hawai‘i Children’s Theater and Kaua‘i Community Players fall production of “The Wiz” invite the community to auditions Aug. 15 and Aug. 16.
Based on “The Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, “The Wiz” won seven Tony Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Musical for 1975. With music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, Dorothy’s fantasy adventures in the Land of Oz radiate energy in this vibrant musical that blends rock, soul and gospel music.
General auditions will take place in two-hour blocks from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 15 and on Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; noon to 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Call-backs will be Aug. 17.
All auditions are at the KAPA warehouse in Puhi and are on a first come, first served basis. Actors must appear promptly at or shortly before the desired audition time block; latecomers will be asked to return at one of the later time slots. Prospective cast members should plan to stay for the entire two-hour block of time. These are closed auditions; no spectators will be allowed.
There are roles for children eight and older, teens and adults. Although originally cast of all African Americans, this version will feature actors of all races and ethnicities, boys and girls, men and women. Talented dancers are especially encouraged to audition. Anyone who is interested in auditioning should prepare a song and bring the sheet music if wishing to audition with piano accompaniment.
Additionally, those auditioning should wear loose (not baggy) clothing with appropriate shoes for dancing. No sandals, slippers, Crocs or bare feet. Those with long hair are asked to tie it back.
Rehearsals will begin Sept. 9 and take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Performances will be at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall the weekends of Nov. 14 to Nov. 16 and Nov. 21 to Nov. 23. Two performances Saturdays.
