HA‘ENA — County lifeguards are now assigned to Ke‘e Beach, bringing the total number of guarded beaches on Kaua‘i to 10.
Anahola, Ha‘ena, Hanalei (2 towers), Kealia, Kekaha, Lydgate, Po‘ipu and Salt Pond are also staffed by lifeguards.
The Ke‘e Beach lifeguards are currently working out of an Ocean Safety Bureau truck and tent, while arrangements are being made for a temporary tower to be installed at the site.
A new tower for Ke‘e Beach should be installed sometime next year.
With the increase in guarded beaches, OSB has hired four more lifeguards and now has 43 lifeguards on staff.
In addition, the bureau has re-structured its organization to include three districts with a supervisor assigned to each district — north, east, and southwest.
OSB’s expansion also includes a training officer and the promotion of Kalani Vierra to water safety supervising officer.
