The Second Annual Hanalei Open Water Swim on July 26 will be dedicated to last year’s first-place finisher, Laurie Denton, who died of breast cancer in the fall. Denton had been a long-time swimmer who also was active in paddling and outrigger canoe racing.
She competed in many long-distance swims and outrigger races and shared her expertise and techniques with others. A portion of the funds raised from the open swim will benefit an individual or family who is also dealing with breast cancer.
The Open Swim, sponsored by the Namolokama O’Hanalei Canoe Club, is for both keiki and adults. The keiki will swim around the Hanalei Pier in two events — the 8 and Under and 9-12 divisions. Older youth and adults have a choice of either a 1/2- or 1-mile swim along the shoreline of the bay. Medals and ribbons will be awarded and each participant will receive a commemorative shirt.
Pre-registration ends on Friday. Late registration at the pier will be at 7 a.m. the day of the event. The first event will start at 9 a.m.
Application forms are available either on the Web site www.namolokama.com or at various surf, bike shops or athletic clubs.
