Police charge 2 with attempted murder in shooting

KAPA‘A — Two males were arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder in connection with a drive-by shooting this weekend on the Eastside, county officials said yesterday.

A 26-year-old man is being held at police cellblock in Lihu‘e. The other suspect, reportedly a 17-year-old male, is being held at a detention center on O‘ahu.

The suspects were arrested in the vicinity of Lydgate Park after police discovered them in a parked car shortly after the shooting occurred.

A silver sedan was driving south on Kuhio Highway at roughly 11 p.m. on Friday when two shots were fired toward the McDonald’s as four customers were leaving the restaurant, officials said.

No one was injured, but the building sustained some damage.

Authorities, who were investigating the incident yesterday afternoon, had marked on either side of the restaurant’s main entrance where they found two bullets at about head level lodged in the building’s concrete base.

One of the witnesses, who would not be identified because of the pending investigation, said yesterday that he felt one of the bullets fly by his head before it struck the restaurant.

Police have not confirmed what type of gun was used in the shooting, according to county spokesperson Mary Daubert.

Officials did not release the identity of the adult man who was arrested.

The incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Patrick Balbarino at 241-1684, Police Dispatch at 241-1711, or Crime Stoppers at 241-1887.
