Kaua‘i’s Nage Melamed edged out fellow local girl Brianna Cope and three other girls to win the Rip Curl GromSearch’s Girls 16 and Under division over the weekend at Huntington Beach, Calif.
This is the third stop for the grom search.
This win comes just a little more than a week after Melamed captured the Hawai‘i Amateur Surfing Association state championship in the Girls 17 and Under division.
Koa Smith gave fellow Hawai‘i surfer Ian Gentil and the field a run in the Boys 12 and Under division. The two were reportedly neck and neck, with the result coming down to the final seconds. Gentil would come out on top.
He also finished third in the Boys 14 and Under division behind Evan Geiselman.
Luke Davis took the Boys 16 and Under division.
Smith has posted wins in the grom search before having won the Boys 14 and Under division last year, also in California.
Others who have won on this stage before were Alex Smith, Malia Manuel and Alana Blanchard.
The Rip Curl GromSearch will now head to Maui where Lahaina Harbor will host the event on July 12.
