HILO, Big Island — The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo plans to give up its women’s golf and men’s tennis teams starting next year because of a budget shortfall.
The decision will leave the school with 11 interscholastic sports.
Luoluo Hong, UH-Hilo vice chancellor for student affairs and acting athletic director, says all scholarships awarded for the upcoming 2008-09 school year will be honored.
Hong says the school felt it was important to give students one year’s advance notice so they could plan accordingly.
UH Hilo’s associate athletic director and women’s golf coach, Jim DeMello, says he’s disappointed but not surprised by the move.
He says the department doesn’t have enough funding to support 13 sports.
