The four Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative 2008 Youth Tour winners will be among the more than 1,400 high school students to travel to Washington, D.C.
KIUC winners include Jessika-lyn Garcia of Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama campus, Dustin Valdez of Kapa‘a High School, Rachel Anne Wright of Waimea High School and Elisabeth Young of Kaua‘i High School.
The four winners left Kaua‘i Tuesday evening for the Rural Electric Tour, states a press release from Shelley Paik of KIUC.
The tour brings more than 1,400 students to Washington, D.C., each year since the late 1950s. To date, more than 40,000 students from rural areas and small towns across America have taken part in this unique program, the release states.
During the tour, students learn about electric cooperatives, American history and the United States government by attending educational seminars, visiting their representatives in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate and viewing the sights around Washington, D.C.
Students were selected by their respective high schools and were interviewed by a panel comprised of a KIUC board member, a KIUC employee and a member of the cooperative.
