WAILUA — Kaiola Canoe Club picked up eight first place finishes in the Adult division of the Pu‘uwai Regatta, but Hanalei Canoe Club took the overall standings, Saturday.
Armed with a solid showing in Na ‘Opio division, Hanalei CC was able to generate two first-place finishes in the adult class and a solid 10 second-place finishes in 25 events gave that Hanalei the regatta with 279 points overall after pocketing 125 points in Na ‘Opio competition during the morning races.
Kaiola, finishing Na ‘Opio events in third place with 68 points, catapulted to second place overall with 220 points followed by Pu‘uwai Canoe Club in third place with 181 points.
Niumalu Canoe Club, jumping out with three straight first finishes in the adult competition, settled in fourth place overall with 117 points followed by Kilohana, strong in Na ‘Opio, ending with 103 points and Na Molokama rounding out the board with 37 points.
Niumalu dominated the Women Novice A races with a 4:03.97 run through the 1/2-mile course followed by Pu‘uwai chasing at 4:13.06.
The strong Niumalu showing continued in the Men Novice A where its team powered to a 7:31.47, almost 10 seconds faster than Kaiola’s 7:40.46 paddle.
Hanalei, disqualifying for “over on” at the start, did not pick up a strong showing until the third event when its Women Freshman crew came in second place on an 8:02.06 showing below Niumalu’s 7:57.97 run through the mile course.
Kaiola, running its Senior Women Masters in the second heat, topped that division for the first of its eight first-place finishes.
Hanalei looked strong and powered through its turns in the 1.5-mile course, but Kaiola, paced by the Niumalu team in the second heat, slipped through with a 12:44.34 paddle over Hanalei’s 13:05.25 run.
Paddling gets a bye this weekend as the Hanalei Canoe Club gets involved with the Ha‘ena to Hanalei Run/Walk.

The eight-mile Run/Walk starts at Ke‘e Beach and ends at the Hanalei Pier while a 5K event starts and ends at the Hanalei Pier.
