The official hurricane season in Hawai‘i began Sunday and runs through Nov. 30.
To help residents prepare, Kaua‘i Civil Defense Agency has created a guidebook covering natural hazards such as hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes and floods.
Called “Homeowner’s Handbook to Prepare for Natural Hazards,” it can be downloaded at www.kauai.gov
The free book is published by the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program. Limited quantities in hard copy are also available from Civil Defense.
“The handbook offers a great overview of natural hazards as well as detailed information on how to protect yourself and your family,” Kaua‘i Civil Defense Administrator Mark Marshall said. “By taking small steps that are covered in the book, our citizens can significantly lower risks to their families and homes.”
Among the topics found in the handbook are:
• Basic information on hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes and flooding.
• Details on how to protect yourself and your family.
• Essential emergency supplies and evacuation procedures.
• Emergency contact information and ways to protect your property.
