The Reds’ pitching held the Athletics at bay, and in the fifth inning, capitalized off an injured Athletics’ pitcher to take a 3-1 win in the opening game of the Lihu‘e Baseball League Bash 4 Memorial Day tournament, yesterday.
Gavin Marcelino, starting on the mound for the Reds, shut down Athletic opportunities early, leaving two runners on base in the second inning before Archie Vallatini came in to close.
With one out in the fourth, Koa Luce-Yamamoto, singling to shortstop, broke open a 0-0 deadlock, scoring off an Austin Manera sawed-off single.
Manera came home off an Athletics’ error when the base runner attempted to steal third and the throw went into leftfield for the 2-0 bulge.
But the Athletics answered in the bottom of the frame when Dreyke Butac opened with a two-bagger and crossed the place on a Bubba Yadao RBI before the clock ran out.
As the final round of games started, no results of the opening day were posted on the game central’s standings board.
Kurt Rapozo, one of the LBL Devil Rays Mustang team, had a home run, claimed his grandfather who got to enjoy the shade tent following two of the team’s games, Saturday.
“I think we’re in the lead because no one else has two wins,” the grandfather said. “We beat the Kalawai Cardinals on a coin toss in our first game, and in the second game, the DRays beat the Mililani Crimson Tide.”
Pool play continues this morning starting at 8 a.m.
On the Bronco field, the Lihu‘e Athletics, trying to rebound from its 3-1 loss against the Reds, go up against the Windward Red Sox for the first of six games.
The Mililani Kamikaze open against the West Kaua‘i Red Sox at the Pinto field (closest to the convention hall parking lot), and on the Mustang field (closest to the Elsie Wilcox School parking lot), the Kalawai Cardinals open against the West Kaua‘i Angels, the WK Bronco champions.
All of the games start at 8 a.m. and the public is invited to stop by during the course of the day to check out the action, enjoy some food from the food booth, and browse through the silent auction area.
