PO‘IPU — Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa received permits this week to proceed with a photovoltaic project above an existing parking lot.
The 602-room hotel plans to build a roof structure above the lot, on top of which it will install an 18,500-square-foot, 280-kilowatt photovoltaic system.
Solar manufacturer SunPower Corp. will design and install the system, to be located at the far west end of the Po‘ipu property next to Anara Spa.
The system is expected to generate 438,000 kilowatt hours of power each year, reducing the hotel’s CO2 emissions by more than 237,000 tons, or about 7,000 barrels of oil for generation at Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative.
Depending upon the time of year and weather conditions, the amount of electricity generated by the system is equivalent to what is needed to power 300 homes, according to the Hyatt.
“The resort has many successful environmental programs in effect, but this solar project takes us to the next level of environmental responsibility,” Hyatt General Manager Doug Sears said.
Construction is expected to begin in late May and will be completed in July.
