Wailana Borrero struck out 10 and Jessica Iwata went 2-for-2 with three RBI in Kaua‘i High School’s 6-2 win over Lana‘i High School in the DataHouse/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association State Division II Softball Championships, yesterday at the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The top-ranked Red Raiders (13-1) now advance to their second-straight state championship final appearance. Last year, the Raiders earned the second-place state finish when they lost to Sacred Hearts in the finals. Sacred Hearts has since moved to Division I.
“We’re excited as a team to be in it again,” said the junior winning pitcher Borrero. “We played really hard because we knew we had to win this one to make it to the final.)”
Kaua‘i scored five of its six runs in the third inning.
Borrero pitched seven innings for the win, allowing four hits and went 0-for-1 with two runs scored. Jaezelle Balilea was 1-for-3 with a run and Krystal Ijima went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
For the Pine Lasses, Kaila Daniels also pitched seven innings and allowed four hits, but Lana‘i was strapped with four errors. Jamie Ayudan finished 1-for-3 and a run and Deidra Donato finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champs now faces the Pac-Five Wolf Pack (8-8) in the final at 5 p.m. today at UHRWSS.
Lana‘i (10-8) moves on to the third-place game against Kapa‘a High School (8-9) at 9 a.m., today at UHRWSS.

Pac-FIve defeated Kapa‘a 11-0 yesterday, ending the Warriors’ impressive tournament run. The Warriors got into the tournament on Tuesday by winning their play-in game and won three straight.
The Wolf Pack struck early scoring a run in the first inning and then another six in the second. Kapa‘a was able to get a few hits off of Pac-Five pitchers Leeann Lariosa and Sheridan Mahelona, but was unable to capitalize them.
Leilani Laranio went 2-for-2, Leeana Baltazar was 1-for-3 and Lokelani Manaku was 1-for-3.
For the Wolf Pack, Chante Tesoro was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Keline Yoshimura was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Lariosa struck out six batters, allowed two hits and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Tatum Tokudo was 1-for-4 and two RBI and a run scored.
Division II softball is in its fifth year in existence and an Interscholastic League of Honolulu team has won the championship every year. A win by Kaua‘i will be the first time a public school has won in Division II.
Waimea High School is currently the only KIF team to have won a state championship for softball. The Menehune won in 1990 under the coaching of Albert Soto.
