The final Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying track and field meet saw the return of distance runner Chris Barich.
The Kaua‘i High School runner had been out all season due to an injury and made a triumphant return yesterday, despite the chilly and slippery conditions at the Vidinha Stadium. Barich ran the 1,500 Meter Run and finished second to Waimea High School’s Jared Coleman-Stark.
Barich ran behind the pack at last place for the majority of the race before jolting ahead of his teammate Princeton Gee, Waimea’s Cezar Papa and Island School’s David Donohue. Barich finished with a time of 5:08.22 while Coleman-Stark won with a time of 4:37.62.
All the running events went off yesterday except the Girls 100 Meter Dash and only one runner, Waimea’s Charleen Miguel, signed in for the Girls 400 Meter Dash. She, though, finished with a state consideration time of 1:06.32.
Only one round of discus and one flight of the Boys Long Jump because of the slippery conditions for pit and the runway. The shot put event got canceled.
Kapa‘a High School’s Wally Nishimura was able to get a discus throw of 119 feet, 9.75 inches and Waimea’s Siasau Matatiese threw 118 feet 10.5.
Of the boys jumpers, Kapa‘a’s Pahoa Naihe edged out Torrey Santiago with a jump of 18 feet 9.75 inches. Santiago jumped 18 feet 9.25 inches. Naihe also won the triple jump with a jump of 38 feet, 6 inches.
Waimea’s Jayme Jacinto continues to improve her Girls 300 Meter Hurdles time, this time coming just .18 shy of an automatic state qualifying time with a 50.32.
Kapa‘a’s Joseph Velasco took three events yesterday — the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles (16.79), Boys 200 Meter Dash (24.33) and the Boys 300 Meter Hurdles (42.99).
This was the final regular-season qualifying meet before the KIF championships scheduled for next week.
Team champions will be named and the state track championship announcements will be announced at a later date.
