The Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative board of directors will decide Tuesday whether to fill the seat to be vacated at the end of the month when former federal Judge Alfred Laureta resigns.
The nine-member board has the option of selecting a “qualified candidate” by majority vote to serve the remainder of Laureta’s three-year term.
According to Board Policy 20, the group may choose not to fill the position, as there are at least seven remaining members. It may also select a current board member to ride out the rest of Laureta’s term; however, with only one year left, that option would have the same result as not filling the seat.
The policy further states that due to the expense and time required to train new board members, it is considered “efficient” to look to former members to fill the spot.
There has been no indication so far as to which route the board will pursue, or whether it will look to any of the three runners-up from the March 22 board of directors election.
Ben Sullivan, who was edged out of the running as the fourth highest vote-getter, has expressed an interest in filling the vacancy.
The meeting, which is open to the public, is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the KIUC building, 4463 Pahe‘e St., Lihu‘e.
