KAPA‘A — A healthier Jeremy Robinson returned to the lineup to help lift the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders to a five-set win over Kapa‘a High School yesterday at the Bernice Hundley Gym, 12-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-18 and 15-13.
The senior sat out Kaua‘i’s last outing due to an illness but seemed to be back in form last night finishing with 13 kills and was half of four double blocks.
Kapa‘a started out on the right foot, nearly breezing through the first set and outhitting Kaua‘i 6-3.
The second set was a slightly tighter match up with Kaua‘i’s Travis Stine and Aric Cansino combining for two back-to-back double blocks on Chance Bukoski. But Kapa‘a reclaimed possession when Bukoski found the opening and was able to put it through the block.
With a couple kills from Robinson, Kaua‘i got up to a five-point lead, at 9-4. A few plays later, several Kaua‘i miscues allowed Kapa‘a to get within one. This set saw Kaua‘i spreading out its offense between Robinson, Stine, Basil Walton, Kai Perreira and Austin Simao who combined for 13 kills.
Kapa‘a’s Kelvin Villanueva served two aces and served for four straight points to start a Warrior comeback in the third set. Villanueva shared the setting duties for the night with senior starter Devin Saiki.
A set from Villanueva to Kila Youn danced right atop the tape and landed on the opposite side for another Warrior point.
In the fourth set, Kaua‘i found itself behind Kapa‘a again, but Cansino hit an ace to tie the game at 12 apiece. A hit from Simao gave Kaua‘i the lead which set up another ace from Cansino.
The fifth set is where Kaua‘i posted its best defensive numbers, outblocking Kapa‘a 12-2.
Cansino finished with 42 assists. Walton finished with 17 kills and Stine finished with five kills.
