PO‘IPU — The Sheraton Kauai Resort is taking a page from the Food Network’s “Iron Chef America” by hosting its own competitive cook-off, tonight at Shells Restaurant.
The resort now features a culinary challenge once a month during dinner. The champion is decided by the number of meals sold as well as guest surveys.
Shells Restaurant’s Executive Sous Chef Edwin Mizuno and Sous Chef Ikaika Manaku went head-to-head in the inaugural culinary challenge last month.
Using ingredients such as filet mignon, jumbo prawns, Kilauea jabong, ‘Oma‘o arugula, pickled ginger, green onions, caviar and champagne, the chefs created signature surf-and-turf specials.
Steeped in Western and Japanese influences, Mizuno’s food philosophy is to “please the eye and the palate.” Manaku says his culinary style is inspired by Pacific Rim and Western flavors, with attention to detail making the “difference between good and great.”
The winning chef, Mizuno, won $100.
