WAIMEA — Saturday night was especially sweet for the JV Menehune.
After picking up a 25-22 win against Kapa‘a in the first set, the JV Menehune boys volleyball players see-sawed through the evening before sealing the deal on a 15-13 fifth set.
“This is the boys’ first win of the season,” said an excited Paul Barba, one of the Waimea coaches, but wearing the security orange for Saturday night’s game.
Waimea jumped out to a strong fifth set, but could not close the door as Kapa‘a responded on a strong overall performance from Rui Yap and Jason Iloretta with Sean Shigematsu providing good middle protection before Waimea closed the door.
Following its opening 23-22 win, the JV Menehune dropped 23-25, rebounded with a 25-12 showing in the third set, but dropped to 17-25 in the fourth set before getting its final set win.
David Kaohelaulii paced the JV Menehune win with his solid hits while setter Kalani Kapuniai placed the balls in position and Dane Harding rotating in to provide solid front middle performance.
“They did all the work,” the JV Menehune coaches said. “I don’t have any hair to pull, so I was pulling on my chin.”
Earlier in the week, the JV Menehune came close to a win before dropping to Kaua‘i, also in five.
Kaua‘i jumped out to two straight wins, 25-19 before dropping the third and fourth sets 23-25 to Waimea. Kaua‘i roared back to take the fifth set, and the game on a 15-9 showing.
Kaua‘i opens the second round of the JV boys volleyball season by traveling to the Bernice Hundley Gym on Wednesday while the JV Menehune host Island School.
First service for both games go off at 5 p.m.
