HANALEI — One young surfer was overheard as saying: “It’s better than my birthday.”
The boy was referring to the 7th Annual Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic hosted by pro-surfers Andy and Bruce Irons last Saturday, in Hanalei. He was among the many groms who competed in the annual surfing competition and received a bevy of prizes. Surfboards, T-shirts, hats, sunglasses and more were handed out to the keiki and finalists in each division of the competition who also received beach chairs, comforters, umbrellas, board bags and a trophy.
Elijah Alderete was the young one who won the Menehune 6 to 8 Push-in division, a division in which the surfers who are pushed into the 3-foot waves by “grown-ups.”
Also in that division was Kin Goldman, who finished in second place, and Kainehe Hunt who finished in third place.
Mainei Kinimaka was the top-place finisher in the youngest girls’ division for 9- to 10-year olds. She was followed by Frankie Harrer and Camilla Vernon.
In the Boys 9 to 10 division, Chance Olanalan took home the top honors, with Niko Traubman and Titus Langridge rounding out the top three.
The annual Irons classic is usually held at the beginning of the calendar year, but due to the Irons’ brothers professional surfing schedule, it had to be pushed to a later date.
In addition to the competition, sponsors Red Bull contributed Mainland tickets for Kyle Galtes, Tatiana Weston-Webb, Ry Cowan and Nathan Carvalho for the National Scholastic Surfing Association championships in California.
Volcom gave Savanna Sussman, Daniel Carter, Kaoli Kahokuloa, Chatson Barrett and Pierre Graham inter-island tickets for the Hawaii Amateur Surfing Association championships later this year.
