Girls: Kaua‘i 3, Kapa‘a 2 – Sarah Kukino swept Kirsten McCracken in two sets, 6-0, 6-0 and Kaua‘i High School won its match 3-2 over Kapa‘a High School yesterday at the Kiahuna Swim and Tennis Club.
Dasha Lagmay then won her match against Alexsis Valdez, also in two sets, 6-3, 6-2.
In a twist, Kapa‘a’s usual No. 1 singles player Lyndsey Tom, was placed in the top doubles match to play alongside Cherine Ito. The pair won that matchup against Cassady Sirois and Lizzy Schiller 6-3, 6-0.
Kaua‘i’s Jessica Castillo and Tania Hensley took Naomi Taylor and Angela Mones to three sets, winning 3-6, 6-3 and 6-4.
Kapa‘a’s Jazzerie Taeza and Sierra Mayer took down Anna Pifferi and Waters Riley 6-2, 6-2.
Boys: Kaua‘i 3, Kapa‘a 2
Kapa‘a’s boys tennis team was again playing without its top player Chas Okamoto, who is currently on the Mainland.
Adam Kerlin took the No. 1 spot, but was defeated by Kaua‘i’s Sterling Inouye in three sets, 6-2, 4-6 and 6-4.
With that move, though, Kapa‘a was left without a No. 2 player, and Kaua‘i’s Manny Cagden won the second match by default.
Kapa‘a, however, was able to pull out two wins from its doubles teams. Kila Youn and Ador Lopez beat Chris Flynn and Tim Rokohl 7-6 (7-4) and 6-1. Dustin Valdez and Anthony Lopez then beat Lance Matsumoto and Peter Nguyen in three sets, 6-1, 2-6 and 6-2.
Girls: Waimea 5, Island School 0
The Lady Menehune took down the Voyagers of Island School 5-0, yesterday at the Waimea Courts.
Waimea’s Candice Klein defeated Sheena Iwamoto in three sets, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-1. LeeAnn Sagucio defeated Jessica Duarte 6-2 and 6-3.
The teams of Tiffany Lum, Jade Cano, Ceci Sun, Beverly Grande, Miyu Adachi and Dessa Rentrop all won their doubles matches in two straight sets.
Boys: Waimea 4, Island School 1
Island School’s sole win of the afternoon came from its No. 1 singles player Sam Dunham. Dunham fought off Harold Shimono in a tie break in the first set, 7-6 (4) and took the second 6-3.
The only other match played for the boys was by Darrel Nonaka and Logan Domingo. Nonaka beat Logan in two sets, 6-0 and 6-4. Waimea won all the doubles matches by default.
