Kapa‘a 3, Kaua‘i 2 – KAPA’A — The Kapa‘a High School’s boys volleyball team got its first win of the season last night when it defeated Kaua‘i High School in five sets, 25-19, 26-24, 24-26, 18-25 and 15-10.
Kila Youn was the early, hot hitter of the night, racking up 13 kills by the middle of the fourth set. Kapa‘a split its setting duties between Devin Saiki and Korey Pang who were both averaging roughly seven assists a game.
Kaua‘i was held to a minimal offense by the blocking of Alan Kahaunaele, Chance Bukoski and Youn. Kapa‘a had worked itself up to game point, but a double-hit call on John Berales forced the Warriors to give up possession. But Berales then redeemed himself on the next play with the winning tip.
Game 2 was a close one and Kapa‘a rallied from a five-point deficit to tie the game at 21 apiece. The set would be tied again three more times with Kapa‘a taking the advantage when Kaleo Cummings pulled a solo block on Basil Walton.
Bukoski won the set with an ace.
Game 3 also went to extra points, this time in Kaua‘i’s favor. Kaua‘i led up until they got to the final stretch. But Bukoski brought the Warriors back with two aces to tie.
Travis Stine led the Raiders and went back to serve for the final point and won off a lift call on Berales.
Kaua‘i went on the win the next set forcing the fifth.
The next set of matches is scheduled for 5 p.m. (JV) Wednesday at Kaua‘i when the Raiders host the Menehune. The varsity game will follow the JV game, but starting no earlier than 6:30 p.m.
