Sixty-nine Macy’s stores nationwide are preparing to replace their staffed gift wrap departments with expanded self-service cards and wrap shops, including four in Hawai‘i, according to the company.
The Macy’s at Kukui Grove as well as the Honolulu, Kailua and Kona stores will be affected.
Macy’s West spokeswoman Janet De Vor said the move is a business decision based on lack of use by customers at the impacted locations.
The company did not say how many employees would be affected by the change; however, Macy’s goal is to place all impacted associates in open positions in the stores or offer severance packages.
“We’re not letting anyone go if we can help it at all,” said Debbie Chuckas, Kukui Grove Macy’s vice president and store manager.
On Kaua‘i, the gift wrap department’s three full-time, two part-time and four on-call employees have been notified that they are welcome to apply for openings in other departments.
Chuckas said there are plans to remodel the current gift wrap area and provide pre-packaged wrapping materials to Macy’s credit card holders, who previously benefited from the service.
