The Boys and Girls Club of Hawai‘i — Kaua‘i Branch announced that kids can now register for its Junior Olympic Competition scheduled for April 12.
This is a free youth program which allows boys and girls aged 8 to 13 years old to compete separately, to showcase their talent or learn new skills in basketball, soccer, tennis or track and field.
There is no deadline to register to participate and those interested can register up until the day of the event.
“They will be competing in the events individually,” said coordinator and program director for the Lihu‘e branch, Mike Miranda. “For basketball, they will have 45 seconds to score as many baskets as they can from three different spots on the court. And for tennis, they have 30 seconds to try and get the longest volley they can.”
The program was designed to encourage youth participation in sports while promoting sportsmanship.
The champions of these events advance to the regional competition on O‘ahu in hopes of advancing to the national finals.
The local Junior Olympic Competition qualifier will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, April 11 at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School.
Miranda said inquiries should be made directly to the Boys and Girls Clubs in their area — the Lihu‘e Outreach, Kapa‘a or Waimea clubhouses.
Birth certificates or baptismal records are required when registering.
