University of Hawai‘i Rainbow left-handed pitcher Nicholas Rhodes earned Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of March 17-23.
Rhodes, a senior from Corona Del Mar, Calif. (Cypress College), combined for a shutout against Fresno State in 8.2 innings of work. He struck out a career-high 11 batters while allowing just two hits and two walks for his first win of the season. Rhodes retired the first 11 batters he faced, striking out seven in that stretch, including the first four batters of the game.
According to a University of Hawai‘i press release, his great pitching performance came just one day after Jared Alexander tossed a complete-game shutout, giving UH its first back-to-back shutouts since the first two games of the 1999 season.
Hawai‘i heads out on a nine-game road trip this weekend, playing a four-game WAC series at Sacramento State and San Jose State, with a midweek game at No. 21 Stanford in between. The road trip starts in Sacramento on Friday, with a 2 p.m. (11 a.m. HST) game versus Sacramento State.
