Namolokama swept through the Women’s division and topped all the events in the Men’s Division except the Masters at the running of the Prince Kuhio canoe race Saturday.
In claiming a near-clean sweep of the event, Namolokama had to overcome stiff winds and a gnarly eastern swell that greeted paddlers outside Nawiliwili Harbor.
Paddlers at the event said swells made the race challenging. Three canoes suffered huli when meeting the conditions; two canoes required rescuing from a Zodiac that also flipped.
The course was from the Nawiliwili Harbor jetty to Ahukini and back.
In the Women’s Mixed division, Namolokama topped the Overall finish in the 15-boat field with a 1:10:45 paddle followed by Kaiola (1:13:51) and a Namolokama Open team filling in third at 1:14:37.
Niumalu Open (1:18:18), Hanalei Open (1:20:59), Hanalei Mixed (1:25:20), Pu‘uwai Mixed (1:26:06), Namolokama Masters (1:26:49), Pu‘uwai Open (1:30:38) and Pu‘uwai Open B (1:31:25) rounded out the Top Ten overall finishers.
Namolokama topped the Open Women’s division on a 1:14:37 paddle over Niumalu (1:18:18) and Hanalei (1:20:59).
Namolokama (1:10:34) also captured the Mixed division and the Masters (1:26:49) division with Kaiola (1:32:01) taking the Senior Masters in the women’s competition.
Namolokama Open topped the overall race in the Men’s Division with a 1:07:38 finish, nine seconds faster than second finisher Pu‘uwai Open, which crossed the finish at 1:07:47. Pu‘uwai Masters settled in third with a 1:11:36 run.
Namolokama Masters (1:14:32), Pu‘uwai South Open (1:14:49), Kaiola Open (1:16:03), Pu‘uwai Open (1:16:07), Hanalei Open (1:16:44), Kaiola Senior Masters (1:19:42), Kaiola Gold Masters (1:31:32) and Kilohana Novice (1:33:01) round out the 11-boat field.
Based on the overall finish, Namolokama topped the Open Men division on a 1:07:38 run followed by Pu‘uwai (1:07:47) and Pu‘uwai South (1:14:49).
Pu‘uwai also topped the Masters division on a 1:11:36 run with Kaiola taking the Senior Masters on its 1:19:42 performance. Kilohana topped the Novice division on its 1:33:01 paddle and Kaiola earned top finish in the Golden Masters on a 1:31:32 run.
