A kite surfer who was rescued at Maha‘ulepu Saturday died yesterday, county officials said.
Irving Corbett was rescued from the water and brought to shore around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, where bystanders tried to revive him by performing CPR until medics arrived.
Corbett was rushed to Wilcox Hospital where he arrived around 5 p.m.
Though medical staff were able to stabilize his condition, he was unable to breathe or maintain a heartbeat on his own, officials said.
The Hawai‘i Lifeguard Association had posted caution warnings over the weekend for Kekaha, Salt Pond and Po‘ipu on the South Shore, with winds from the east at 15 mph and waves of 2-4 feet through today.
It also warned of extremely hazardous conditions on east and north shores, including waves of 6-10 feet, and a 4-foot northwest swell. A small craft advisory is in effect until Tuesday morning.
