PUAKEA — The Oride family led the Kaua‘i High School golfers to a top finish during the opening of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf season Saturday at the Puakea Golf Course.
Cory Oride, a returning golfer for the Red Raiders, carded a 2-over-par 74 (39-35) while Kelly Oride, a freshman this year, finished with an 86 (42-43), a stroke better than veteran wahine golfer Rae-Lynn Morikawa (44-43-87).
Paced by the brother-sister duo, the Kaua‘i High School golfers netted a 319 team total to take the competition over Kapa‘a (336) and Waimea (388).
Wiley Yoshioka, another returning Raider golfer followed Cory, finishing two strokes off the pace at 76 (36-40). Levi Miyashiro, a strong contender in the Hawai‘i Junior Golf Association program, followed four strokes off the pace (39-39-78).
Allen Koerte (45-46) and Taylor Bell (51-40) rounded out the Red Raider team effort with 91 each.
Sean Mamaclay, a returning golfer for the Warriors, led the Kapa‘a effort two strokes off Cory’s pace at 76 (39-37). He was followed by Justin Uegawa (39-41-80), Kevin Wataya (44-43-87) who regained his composure after struggling through an out-of-bounds and overshooting the first green at Puakea.
Anderson Dreisch (47-46-93) and Aaron Belmonte (50-48-98) rounded out the Kapa‘a boys’ team showing.
Grant Paiste, a strong Menehune contender, was in the first grouping and finished with a 90 (47-43) to lead the Waimea effort. He was followed by Aaron Medeiros (50-44-94), Justin Moriguchi (52-20) and Jake Kuzen (49-53) who each carded 102. Joshua Waalani Matsusaka (54-62-106) rounded out the Waimea leaders.
Cyrus Ogawa, a strong returning golfer from Kula High and Intermediate, finished with an 84 (40-44). He was joined by Eric Gyatt (52-51-103). Island School was led by Ryan Wong (44-48-92) and Matt Clark (67-55-122).
Following Kelly and Morikawa for Kaua‘i, Gabby Saiki, a strong golfer for Kapa‘a, finished with a 91 (47-44) after recovering from a shaky first hole where she had to contend with a rough lie near the out-of-bounds stream and correct for the sand on that effort.
Kristy Rapozo, another returning Red Raider golfer, followed (51-48-99) and Melissa Kagawa of Waimea High School rounded out the field at 110 (58-52).
