Boys: Kapa‘a 5, Kaua‘i 0 PO‘IPU — Kapa‘a High School’s Chas Okamoto defeated Kaua‘i High School’s Sterling Inouye 6-0 and 6-0 yesterday in the opening tennis matches at the Kiahuna Swim and Tennis Club. The Warriors went on to take all their matches against the Red Raiders.
Freshman Okamoto has earned the top spot on the team and said that he was satisfied with his performance yesterday.
“It felt pretty good for my first match,” he said. “There were a couple loose balls on my part, but it was all right.”
Kapa‘a’s Adam Kerlin won his match against Manny Cagdan on a tie-break, winning 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
The team of Kila Youn and Steven Pascual defeated Chris Flynn and Tim Rokohl in three sets, 4-6, 6-2 and 6-2. Dustin Valdez and Ador Lopez won 6-1, 6-4 over Lance Matsumoto and Peter Nguyen. Jacque Amo and Thomas Gausepohl beat Tyrus Ceria-Lux and Domingo Loero, 6-3 and 6-0.
Girls: Kapa‘a 3, Kaua‘i 2
Top-seeded Lyndsey Tom went to battle with Kaua‘i’s Sarah Kukino. The pair split their first two sets with the first going to Kukino 1-6. Tom fired back, winning the next one 6-4. Tom cleaned up in the third to win 6-3.
Kaua‘i’s Dasha Lagmay won her match 6-2, 6-1 over Kapa‘a’s Cherine Ito.
In the girls doubles matches, Jessica Castillo and Tania Hensley defeated Kirsten McCracken and Tori Yatogo, 7-5, 6-2. Alexsis Valdez and Sierra Mayer won 6-1, 7-6, (7-2) on a tie break over Waters Riley and Mallory Miner.
Kapa‘a’s Naomi Taylor and Jazzerie Taeza beat Jasmine Ikeda and Sherri Cubangbang, 6-3, 6-0.
Boys: Waimea 4, Island School 1
Island School’s Sam Dunham defeated Waimea High School’s Harold Shimono, Jr. in two sets, 6-4, 6-4, yesterday in the afternoon matches at Kiahuna.
The Menehune, however, won the match 4-1, when Island School defaulted two of the boys double matches.
Waimea’s Darrel Nonaka defeated Ashton Perex, 6-2, 6-3. Jordan Sato and Michael Haack defeated Logan Domingo and Ryan Bender 6-2, 6-1.
Girls: Waimea 4, Island School 1
The Voyagers’ No. 1 girls Madison Duarte beat Jade Cano, 6-4, 7-5. Waimea went on to win the next four matches.
Miyu Adachi defeated Sheena Iwamoto, 6-2, 7-5 and the doubles teams of Candace Klein, Lee Ann Sagucio won their matches on a tie break over Tayler James and Juli Blachowiak, 7-5, 6-6 (7-5). Ceci Sun and Beverly Grande beat Jessica Duarte and Isabelle Worley, 6-0, 6-0. Dessa Rentrop and Amanda Kamakoa won their match over Hartley Dabin and Blaise Lamadrid.
