Waimea High School’s Jayrald Watanabe and Kapa‘a High School’s Pahoa Naihe ran head-to-head going into the final lap as the anchors for the 4×400 Meter Relay yesterday at Vidinha Stadium.
At the second Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation Qualifying Track Meet yesterday, Watanabe was able to break away from Naihe by the turn to come in with a time of 3:51.15. Kapa‘a finished with a time of 3:53.98.
In an earlier race, senior hurdler Kathleen Cadiente of Kaua‘i High School got some tough competition from freshman Jayme Jacinto of Waimea in the GIrls 300-Meter Hurdles. Jacinto started with the slight lead, beating Cadiente to the first set of hurdles. Both battled down the straight-a-way with Cadiente winning by a lean. Cadiente clocked in a time of 52.87 while Jacinto was clocked at 52.93.
The Boys 200-Meter Dash was decided by six hundredths of a second. Kapa‘a’s Joseph Velasco won with a time of 24.63. Kaua‘i’s Joey Barnasihan finished at 24.69. Velasco and Barnasihan, however, did not run against each other because they were in separate heats.
Velasco also won the 110 Meter High Hurdles and the Boys 300 Meter Hurdles.
Kapa‘a’s Adam Kerlin won the Boys 1,500 Meter Run and the Boys 3,000 Meter Run. In an impressive run, Kerlin beat defending KIF champion Jared Coleman-Stark with a 4:52.31. Coleman-Stark came in at 4:58.95.
Kerlin came from behind the pack in the 3,000, showing a late-race burst to come in at 11:18.37.
Coleman-Stark went on the win the Boys 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:23.72.
In other races, Waimea’s Gregory Griffin won the Boys 400 Meter Dash with a time of 57.17. Kaua‘i’s Andrew Renaud won the Boys 100 Meter Dash with a time of 11.55.
