Oklahoma Christian University returns to defend its title in the 9th Annual Kaua‘i Collegiate Cup.
Host school Western Kentucky University announced yesterday that the Kaua‘i Collegiate Cup will be on March 14 and 15 at the Wailua Golf Course and will include 11 schools from 10 different states.
Oklahoma Christian, Hawai‘i Pacific University, WKU, Gonzaga, Lipscomb, Old Dominion, Southeastern Louisiana, University of Texas Pan American, Vanderbilt, West Liberty State and Wofford College will be participating this year.
Of the teams, Oklahoma Christian, HPU and WKU return from last year’s field.
Also returning are two of last year’s top three finishers. Oklahoma Christian’s Rhein Gibson and Fernando Gonzales. Gibson and Gonzales completed the 54-hole competition in a tie for second place shooting 5-under at 211.
In the history of the Kaua‘i Collegiate Cup, only one school has won back-to-back titles: San Diego in 2000 and 2001. WKU has won two but in non-consecutive years — 2002 and 2005.
Selected college coaches and golfers have been selected to conduct a “college workshop” at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Wailua. The workshop is free and open to all Kaua‘i youths and is designed to help them successfully transition to college life and college athletics.
