The Kaua‘i High School Key Club returned with two first-place honors and two outstanding honors from the recent state convention, said advisor Charlene Navarro.
Molly Hasegawa was the author of an impromptu essay which finished with first place honors in that category.
But the Non-Traditional Scrapbook was the highlight for the club as it earned first- place honors for the fifth straight year, Navarro said.
Krystal Naumu and Nicole Gaetjens spearheaded the effort which presented memories of the club’s various projects and meetings on candy labels for a “Key Club Krunch” candy bar.
Combined with vignettes of the events, the labels were liberally garnished with photos and placed into specially created candy jars.
Navarro said in addition to the two chairpeople, Michelle Kato spearheaded the artwork and Kalen Adachi created the wooden stand which held the red fabric backdrop touting the “Candy Assortment of Service” banner, the theme for the scrapbook.
This Non-Traditional Scrapbook will be entered to compete at the District Convention which is scheduled to run April 18-20 in Sacramento, Calif.
Navarro said the Kaua‘i High School club will be represented by Micah Mizukami and Elliott Yamamoto.
In addition to the first-place honors, Navarro said Dewayne Kong was named the Outstanding Kiwanian for his role as an adviser to the club. The Kaua‘i High School club was also named the Outstanding Large Club for the second straight year.
Other awards included a second-place plaque for its placement in the talent show.
The club’s membership includes Sheldon Chu, Shaun Koide, Tyler Navarro, Chris Flynn, Yamamoto, Adachi, Michael Fujikawa, Daniel Victor, Keilan Shigematsu, Mizukami, George Kato, Dustin Julian, Bryan Ruiz, William Balbin, Kellie Kurasaki, Kimberly Oride, Daisy Liberato, Sherri Cubangbang, Marisa Valenciano, Dreana Valenciano, Hasegawa, Rae-Lyn Morikawa, Naumu and Sheila Baysa.
Advisers include Navarro, Andy Kakutani and Taharaa Stein.
