The state Department of Transportation opened a cell phone waiting area at Lihue Airport Friday to allow motorists to park and wait for passengers on arriving flights.
The new cell phone waiting area, a similar concept to the one at Honolulu International Airport and at some Mainland airports, provides a place for motorists to park for free while they wait for a cell phone call from arriving passengers.
The cell phone waiting area is curbside along Ho‘olimalima Place, next to the Car Rental facilities and just a few minutes away from the airport terminal. This area will be available for use from 5 a.m. to close of business daily. An electronic message sign will be posted during the first week of service to provide directions to the waiting area.
Airport officials believe the waiting area will make it convenient for those picking up arriving passengers and reduce traffic congestion fronting the baggage claim area. It will also eliminate the need for motorists to drive around the airport while waiting for arriving passengers. Cell phone waiting area users will be allowed to wait up to an hour on the property. Unattended vehicles will be cited and/or towed, and commercial vehicles will not be allowed to park there.
