Waimea High School’s Natasha Werner didn’t need a big twirl on the mound before launching her first discus. Werner’s first throw went 94 feet and 9.5 inches in the first Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation Qualifying Track Meet at Vidinha Stadium.
With the jitters of the first meet and technical difficulties, the races got a late start.
Waimea’s Cayla Kitabayashi got off to a good start by winning the 100 Meter Hurdles with a time of 16.86. Fellow Menehune Sunni Acosta ran an 18.26.
For the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles, Kapa‘a High School’s Joseph Velasco showed his sleek form by finishing with a time of 17.02.
One of the most exciting races of the day was the Boys 1,500 Meter Run. Without KIF defending champion Jared Coleman-Stark, who was sat out due to illness, the race was a good one. Kaua‘i’s Bryson Honjo won with a time of 5:06.27, but the real race was between Kaua‘i’s Darren Lapitan and Kapa‘a’s Alex LaMadrid who finished two-hundredths of a second apart from each other. Lapitan edged it out with a time of 5:07.01 while LaMadrid clocked in at 5:07.03.
Kaua‘i’s Jamilee Jimenez stopped her High Jump at 5 feet, but the senior holds the KIF record at passed 5 feet 2 1/4.
Not all of the times, distances and heights for all events were made available at the end of the meet.
The next meet is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday at Vidinha Stadium.
